A new way to treat inflammation

A peptide technology that targets immune-inflammatory cells

Our Story

Proteios’ origins can be traced back to an introduction made by Professor Richard Furneaux of Victoria University of Wellington, who was acquainted with both Richard Payne and Duncan Hardie.

This introduction led to an informal meeting between Richard and Duncan in Sydney, where initial conversations focused on the funding and commercial support of early-stage drug discovery projects. At that time, Richard had a number of early-stage medicinal chemistry programs that he believed showed genuine potential but lacked a clear commercial pathway.

Over the following months, it became evident that a more structured and dedicated approach was required. Approximately twelve months after that first meeting, Proteios was formally established as the commercial vehicle through which selected biotechnology could be developed, governed and progressed beyond the academic environment.

Since formation, Proteios has evolved from those early discussions into a focused drug development company with granted intellectual property, defined areas of scientific concentration and an expanding commercial and governance framework.

The Meaning of Proteios

Proteios — of fundamental importance.

The name Proteios is derived from the Greek root meaning that which is fundamental or essential — the underlying element upon which other structures are built.

The company’s focus on foundational science: Drug discovery and development that begins with core biological mechanisms and progresses through disciplined, structured development toward real-world application.

Proteios is grounded in the belief that meaningful scientific progress is not driven by speed or hype, but by rigor, clarity of purpose and respect for fundamentals. The company’s work is intentionally focused on essential biological processes, building from first principles toward outcomes that endure.
